Egg Shell Planters

So if you do much gardening, you probably know that it's best to start your seeds inside, before planting them. Our family is trying out a new technique this year. As always, we've procrastinated getting our tomatoes started, but we shouldn't be too terribly far behind. We're using egg shells as our "planters". They are chalk full of calcium, which is a vital nutrient for a good plant to grow strong and healthy.
So here's how we do it:
For any meal that we use eggs in, we save the shell. We're very careful when cracking them, to try and make it as clean of a break in the middle of the shell as possible. This way one egg shell can make 2 planters. We wash out the shell really well and make sure we get the membrane all out of the inside. This ensures bacteria won't grow. Then we lay them upside down on a paper towel until dry.
Now pull out an empty egg carton and place one half shell into each space. Now fill them with potting soil (we prefer organic non GMO). Place one seed in each shell of whatever seed you're planting. Cover up with a little more soil. Water thoroughly, without drowning the seed.
Water daily, or as needed
The plants do not need to be placed in the sunlight until you see them begin to peak their leaves above the soil. Make sure and keep your lid to your egg carton closed, this makes the perfect miniature green house. As soon as they begin sprouting, you need to sit them in a sunny location inside such as a window sill and open the lid.
*Note: If you use the cardboard egg cartons, it will absorb all of the moisture up

As soon as your seedlings are big enough to go outside (when your plant grows it's first set of true leaves), you can take each egg shell out and plant them.(crush up the egg shell with each plant to keep the great source of calcium near the roots)

Happy Gardening!

Mission Work, Birthdays, and Canning!

Greetings again fellow bloggers
It has been crazy around here with all of our activities. Next time someone asks how my sister stays socialized as a homeschooler, I think I will challenge them to come live a week in our house and see how busy we stay with social activities. :-P
So much has happened since my last post. We closed on our property to build our new house. Momma and Daddy hired someone to go out and brush hog it, the rain had really made the grass grow tall. Daddy has also been working on finalizing the house plans. I am getting so excited!

My little sister turned 17 last month! Ok, so she's 17, maybe she's not so little anymore. But she is in my mind. She's been driving me around town, which is really hard to get used to. For her birthday, we ate lunch out with friends and then she requested homemade spaghetti alfredo for dinner. A few days later, she had some friends over to spend the night. On the night of her birthday, I took her out for a fun photo shoot. Here are some of my favorites

I also love this one of us together

A year ago April, we attended a family camp in Arkansas, Fort Rock Family Camp. We had a blast and I felt like God was calling me to go back and volunteer. We visited with the family that owns it and they said that would be great. I went for the first time about a month ago. They asked me back at the end of July. The Forsyth family is such a blessing and their ministry is so wonderful! Each time I go, I feel blessed beyond all measure. I have also made many new friends there. Here are some pictures of my adventures:

Yesterday was Daddy's birthday. Momma made chocolate gravy for breakfast. Then we made spaghetti and meatballs for his dinner with chocolate meringue pie for dessert! He got a new Bible for a gift, and I made him a sign that will go lovely in our new home when it gets built :-)

God has really blessed our garden this year. Our cucumbers have been producing tons of cucumbers, and you know what that means....PICKLES!! We have put up so many dill and bread & butter pickles, we are running out of room! It has been wonderful.

Speaking of gardening. Our dear friends loaned us a film called Back to Eden. They kept telling us it would change our entire perspective on gardening, well they were so right. I can't even describe what a blessing this video is. I recommend everyone watch it. you can even watch it for free online here.

I think that's enough of my ramblings for one day. I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. I would love for everyone to share their summer adventures. It's always interesting to see what everyone else is up to.
Have a blessed weekend

Heirloom Seeds

chioggia-beets-with-hands

I have been so convicted lately that we should be growing everything we eat. Think of how much healthier we, as a nation, would be. Several years ago, we discovered Baker Creek Seeds in Mansfield, MO. They are absolutely amazing, and so extremely helpful with any of your questions you may have. All of their seeds are heirloom seeds. They have thousands of any vegetable/fruit you can image. Not only are their seeds wonderful, but you should check out their catalog (you can request a free one on their website). The pictures are absolutely gorgeous! We also live by their book: Heirloom Life Gardener http://www.rareseeds.com/heirloom-life-gardener/. It has help on planting any of their seeds they carry. Everything we buy in a normal grocery store is pumped full of preservatives and everything else under the sun. That is not good for our bodies. All of those things are not natural, and our bodies were not designed to know what to do with it all. The result is obesity and many health issues!

I highly encourage you order a catalog from Baker Creek Seeds. If you are in that neck of the woods, I also highly recommend you stopping by their village.

Church Centennial & Fall Garden

Hello blogging friends. This post probably should have been 2 different posts, but I ended up just doing it as one.

First off, I decided to snap some shots of our fall garden. We have tomatillas (which are looking great, just not putting on yet), lima beans, squash, and jalapenos from this summer are still flourishing like crazy.

 Momma's lima beans

Our first squash just appeared

These are our squash plants that are going absolutely crazy. We only have two that survived. The one shown in the picture is actually planted a few feet away from where I snapped the picture (so you can't see where it's in the ground). It just keeps crawling. If you look really close, it continues up into the upper left of the picture. Crazy. :D

Ok, so now for the second half of my post. This year, our church celebrated it's Centennial. This weekend, we had a Centennial Celebration. Old pastors came, we had a get together out on church property, and fireworks!!

We were able to take along our friend's son Keegan. :D He liked Mallory pushing him in the swing

Have a great week.

Blueberry Patch

These past few weeks have been absolutely crazy. My sister, Mallory, performed in the Missoula Childrens Theatre that came to town. Therefore, she had practice every day most of the day. She did a wonderful job playing Basil in The Tortoise Versus The Hare.

This past week I have started working for a local blueberry farm picking in the mornings. It's quite fun (minus the heat)! haha.

We also took a day trip to Silver Dollar City last weekend. That was fun to be able to just run away for the day and have some relaxing time.

I don't know about everybody else but I have a hard time wanting to accomplish the things that I need to get done when it's 100degrees outside. All it makes me want to do is live in my pool. :D Speaking of our pool, we had my friend's little boy over the other day to swim and he is such a joy to babysit. He is a water baby, that is for sure.

So now that I've sort of told you how I've been spending my summer, I'd like to hear from you. What are your favorite summer activities and how do you stay cool? : )

Easter 2012

Happy Easter everyone. Sorry I haven't posted in a little while. Things seem to be crazy around here with all of our extracurricular activities. :D  I hope everyone had a wonderful day celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ with their family. Today was such a beautiful day to sit outside.

I thought I'd post some pics from our garden that I took a couple of days ago. Not everything is up yet, but I have a feelling they'll be peeking out of the dirt in just a few days.  : D
