Egg Shell Planters

So if you do much gardening, you probably know that it's best to start your seeds inside, before planting them. Our family is trying out a new technique this year. As always, we've procrastinated getting our tomatoes started, but we shouldn't be too terribly far behind. We're using egg shells as our "planters". They are chalk full of calcium, which is a vital nutrient for a good plant to grow strong and healthy.
So here's how we do it:
For any meal that we use eggs in, we save the shell. We're very careful when cracking them, to try and make it as clean of a break in the middle of the shell as possible. This way one egg shell can make 2 planters. We wash out the shell really well and make sure we get the membrane all out of the inside. This ensures bacteria won't grow. Then we lay them upside down on a paper towel until dry.
Now pull out an empty egg carton and place one half shell into each space. Now fill them with potting soil (we prefer organic non GMO). Place one seed in each shell of whatever seed you're planting. Cover up with a little more soil. Water thoroughly, without drowning the seed.
Water daily, or as needed
The plants do not need to be placed in the sunlight until you see them begin to peak their leaves above the soil. Make sure and keep your lid to your egg carton closed, this makes the perfect miniature green house. As soon as they begin sprouting, you need to sit them in a sunny location inside such as a window sill and open the lid.
*Note: If you use the cardboard egg cartons, it will absorb all of the moisture up

As soon as your seedlings are big enough to go outside (when your plant grows it's first set of true leaves), you can take each egg shell out and plant them.(crush up the egg shell with each plant to keep the great source of calcium near the roots)

Happy Gardening!

Y'all Eat Yet?

Our family has recently discovered a guy named Johnny Nix, host of Campfire CafĂ©  on RFDTV. Now, I will preface this post with saying that I am not a fan of watching TV, I have been very convicted lately about not spending time in front of the screen. However, this guy really knows everything you  need to know about cooking over a campfire, and the show is completely clean.
Recently, I found a book at the local library with tons of recipes by him. I recommend everyone check out his website, he is a very knowledgeable man. It surprised me all the different things you can easily cook with just a Dutch oven and a few hot coals.

Woweeee-How Time Flies

Are my eyes going crazy, or does the calendar really say May 27th?? I can hardly believe it! So many exciting things are going on around here. First of all, I just want to express my sincere sympothy to those who lost loved ones in the tornadoes in Moore, OK. To sit  back and watch the destructive tornadoes sweep across my state, I just didn't know how to feel-just utter sadness for those families!! I think it's wonderful how so many have stepped in to give of their time and money to help them begin to start over.

Back on the sunny side, my sister had her homeschool band concert and played beautifully. She plays keyboard, flute, and guitar. Here in a couple of weeks, she will have her dance recital. We're ready for things to calm down a bit for the summer. :-)
Also, some exciting news. Momma and Daddy have purchased property for us to build a new home on!! Aww... country life-I can't wait :-D I've always been a country girl at heart, now I'll actually be one!

For Mother's Day, I had a fun project I made for Momma. We have this fettish with all things wooden: wooden spoons, wooden bowls, wooden boxes, wooden, wooden, wooden!! So I carved her a spoon, and yes it's a useable spoon for the kitchen. It's actually made from Crepe Myrtle and sealed with coconut oil. I absolutely loved making it, and have considered making more and selling them. Any thoughts??

Our garden is coming up pretty well, also. We've already had a couple of bowls of salad with our fresh lettuce and spinach! How is everyone else's doing?

Blessings,
Erin
